Antique Australian Sweetheart Brooch, Robert Robertson, Melbourne. Dating to the the First World War, c1914-18, the brooch comprises a yellow gold boomerang with applied lettering 'Best Wishes', surmounted by maps of Australia & England, entwined hearts and ivy. Strongly patriotic, the brooch combines national symbolism with wartime sentiment.

Jewellery of this type was produced during the First World War, when Australian servicemen were stationed in England in large numbers. These brooches were exchanged as tokens of affection and remembrance, given before departure or sent home during service.

A well-preserved example of Australian wartime jewellery, this is a very desirable collectors piece.
