Antique Mid-Victorian Enamel & Diamond Brooch, the pierced and stepped quatrefoil brooch set with rose cut diamonds and black enamel.

This brooch is a fine example of the enamelling technique Taille d’épargne. With this technique designs are etched into the metal and the recesses are filled with opaque enamel, usually black enamel. Commonly used in mourning jewellery, this method of enamelling was superseded by guilloche enamel, which used translucent enamel over engine turned patterns.
