Antique Victorian Tiger Claw Brooch. Dating to the late nineteenth century, the brooch is formed from a pair of opposing tiger claws mounted in finely detailed yellow gold, surmounted by a lion and finished with a suspended heart-shaped drop set with a ruby. The gold mounts are decorated with applied leaf motifs and scalloped borders.

Tiger claw jewellery became particularly fashionable during the Victorian period, especially in British India, where the tiger was associated with strength, courage and protection. The lion surmount adds another traditional symbol of courage and strength, while the heart introduces a sentimental element characteristic of Victorian jewellery.

Condition: Very good antique condition. There is some tarnish on the gold work, possibly owing to being housed in the fitted box for a considerable time. We choose not to over clean the brooch, leaving it instead to the new owner.
