Vintage Silver Marcasite Bird Brooch Designed as a heron in flight. The bird is individually set with pyrite gems and a red stone eye. Length 5.4cm. Stamped Sterling and Germany.
Germany was a large producer of high quality Marcasite jewellery before the Second World War. Marcasite jewellery varies enormously in quality and this brooch is an excellent example of the best type of marcasite jewellery.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Very solid construction. Roller ball clasp locking clasp working well. Note: four pyrites are missing.
Interesting Fact: Marcasite jewellery is set with pyrite (fool's gold), and not as the name suggests, actual marcasite. Marcasite is a mineral, but cannot be used used as a gem due to its brittleness.
