An absolutely charming Georgian sterling silver Cowrie Shell Vinaigrette by Joseph Willmore of Birmingham, 1808. The vinaigrette bears the inscription "Within this box a magic spell, will cause thy pain to bid farewell'

Vinaigrettes are small, often decorative boxes that were used as a conveyance for perfume and scents. Sanitation was often poor in the 18th & 19th Centuries and scent was used to disguise unpleasant smells. It was also believed that there was an association with bad smells and disease, and that scent was a form of protection against illness.
The term vinaigrette derived from the aromatic vinegar that was contained in a sponge held in a compartment covered by a pierced grill. To prevent corrosion in silver vinaigrettes, these compartments would be gilded.
Used instead of large glass vials or bottles, the vinaigrette was convenient for travel.

During the 19th century, vinaigrettes were an indication of social ranking, as few could afford perfume. A display of wealth and privilege, the more ornate or decorative the vinaigrette, the higher the social standing of its owner.

Antique & Estate Jewellery is seldom in perfect or ‘new’ condition as age is inherent for it to be classified as such. All items we sell are ‘Second-hand’ and will almost certainly show some signs of wear. These may include faint scuffmarks and small dents, even very minor repairs. These are considered acceptable when dealing with objects that have lived a full life. Any imperfections or minor damage will be listed in the description and visible in the photo.

We do ask that you carefully view the photographs provided and note we are happy to supply more images or fuller description if requested.
