Antique Victorian Cameo Brooch, the oval helmet shell cameo depicting a cart and oxen within a village landscape, in a double gold twist surround. 9ct yellow gold. Weight 13.26 grams. Length 5cm. Width 4.4cm. Frame stamped 9ct.
Cameos were generally carved in either hardstone or shell. Shell cameos had the advantage over hardstone cameos in that they were light and easier to carve. A shell cameo could be cut in a number of days. The most widely used shell was the large tropical Helmet Shell. Helmet shell came in two varieties Cassus Rufus (pink and white toned) and Cassus Madagascariensis (brown and white toned)
Condition: Good vintage condition. Some minor scuffmarks to gold frame. No cracks or chips to cameo. Scratched script signature 'G' on reverse of cameo. Safety chain attached.
