Antique Victorian Cameo Brooch, the oval helmet shell cameo depicting a playful putti and goat.
Metal: 9ct yellow gold.
Weight 9.2 grams.
Cameos were a very popular jewellery item throughout the Victorian period, and subject matter often derived from classical Greek & Roman sculpture. Prices charged for cameos varied greatly and importantly this enabled a wide cross section of society to enjoy them. Wearing a cameo implied not so much wealth but knowledge and learning. Many cameo subjects were derived from Classical sculpture from the Greek & Roman world.
In 1851, the novelist Elizabeth Gaskell wrote to her daughter “Be sure you take care of MY cameo brooch. I find you have got it; now I only lent it to you and I value it extremely, and would not have it lost on any account”
Condition: Very good antique condition, cameo secure in mount but one claw appears damaged. No cracks to the cameo. Gold safety chain attached.
SEDGWICKS pride ourselves on sourcing and selling Antique & Estate Jewellery that is of fine quality and in great condition.
Antique & Estate Jewellery is seldom in perfect or ‘new’ condition as age is inherent for it to be classified as such. All items we sell are ‘Second-hand’ and will almost certainly show some signs of wear. These may include faint scuffmarks and small dents, even very minor repairs. These are considered acceptable when dealing with objects that have lived a full life. Any imperfections or minor damage will be listed in the description and visible in the photo.
We do ask that you carefully view the photographs provided and note we are happy to supply more images or fuller description if requested.
