Vintage Akoya Pearl Suite, Mikimoto
Created in the 1960's, this Vintage Akoya Pearl Suite by Mikimoto is quite simply stunning. The pearls are exceptional and the design fabulous. Very typical of high end jewels produced by Mikimoto in the 1960's this suite illustrates the exacting standards of this world famous firm.
In Japan in 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto successfully created the world's first cultured pearls.
Mikimoto’s father was a noodle-shop owner and worked hard to feed his children, supplementing his income by selling vegetables and charcoal – a stoic work ethic that was instilled in Mikimoto from a young age. The area Mikimoto came from was famous for natural pearls, but these were becoming increasingly scarce due to aggressive harvesting of the oyster beds. This gave Mikimoto the idea to culture his own.
Mikimoto faced public scepticism of his attempts to culture pearls and experienced financial hardships in establishing the business but by 1899 had opened premises in Tokyo. 125 years on the firm he established continues to flourish.
