Antique Victorian Paste Star Brooch retailed by Heming & Co., London, late 19th century

A fine Victorian eight-point star brooch by Heming & Co., London, set throughout with graduated old brilliant-cut paste stones in a classic starburst formation. The stones are well matched and securely set.

The brooch is housed in its original fitted grey leatherette box, marked Heming & Co., 28 Conduit Street, London W. The survival of the original retailer’s box is increasingly rare and is of particular value to collectors and jewellery historians.

Founded in 1745 and still operating today, Heming & Co. were respected London jewellers and retailers, and their name is associated with quality workmanship.

Star brooches of this type were highly fashionable in the Victorian period, worn on the bodice or at the shoulder as both decorative and symbolic motifs. This is a particularly good example of Victorian paste jewellery, combining quality fine workmanship with excellent condition and presentation.

Metal: Silver on gold back

Stones: Paste (old brilliant-cut)

Weight: 11 grams

Diameter: 3cm

Marks: Unmarked (typical for the period)

Era: Victorian, late 19th century

Condition: Very good antique condition. No stones missing or replaced. Clasp professionally altered from original C-clasp to a locking clasp for secure wear.

SEDGWICKS pride ourselves on sourcing and selling Antique & Estate Jewellery that is of fine quality and in great condition.

Antique & Estate Jewellery is seldom in perfect or ‘new’ condition as age is inherent for it to be classified as such. These are considered acceptable when dealing with objects that have lived a full life. Any imperfections or minor damage will be listed in the description and visible in the photo.

We do ask that you carefully view the photographs provided and note we are happy to supply more images or fuller description if requested.

To help you make your assessment, many higher value items are accompanied by an Independent Valuation for Retail or Insurance Purposes.
